Cycling for riders with disabilities
Throughout the world, more than 500 million people live with a disability. Many of them practice a sporting activity, and some of them manage to realise their dream of becoming top-level athletes.
Providing the opportunity to allow each and everyone to fulfil their potential is a concern which ensures the constant activity of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC ) and the International Cycling Union (UCI) in this area. These joint actions lead to a cooperation agreement signed in 2002 by Hein Verbruggen, former UCI President, and Philip Craven, IPC President.
The UCI has worked towards the integration of cycling for riders with disabilities, by:
- adding a section «Cycling for riders with disabilities» in its rules,
- including races in this discipline on its international calendar,
- deploying its International Commissaires at these races,
- producing rankings in this discipline.
Currently riders with disabilities compete in road and track races. The addition of other cycling disciplines governed by the UCI is being studied.
